How to make sure your guests return the headphones

We are so excited that you are planning a Silent Disco Party with us!

This is the fastest growing dance party trend in town and here at www.silent-disco-rental.com we want to make it as easy as possible for you to host awesome parties that will make you the envy of all your friends and the most popular party host for miles around.

One of the first questions people ask is how do we keep the headphones from disappearing?

Obviously, if you are holding a larger party where you don’t know all of the guests personally, the question of how to keep the headphones from walking away becomes a real concern.

In most cases, you have paid a significant sized security deposit when you rented the equipment from us. That means that you are on the hook for the pieces that don’t come back home.

We have compiled a list of strategies for your convenience.
Some will work only under certain circumstances. You will not use the same ones all the time.

How to make sure your Silent Disco guests return the headphones.

It is important that you use multiple strategies for maximum effectiveness.

1) Have a dedicated person in charge of the inventory:
Clear lines of responsibility yield better results.

2) Have a staff member at each door:
If there are multiple exits, enlist a few other dedicated (non-partying) staffers to watch those doors.

3) Don’t let anyone enter or leave without exchanging headphones:

Make sure all doors are covered and nobody enters without picking up a set of headphones and nobody leaves without dropping off a set.

4) Don’t allow jackets, backpacks or over-sized purses into the party room:
Again, this relies on having staff to enforce it. The reason to do it is that it prevents guests from concealing anything on the way in or out.

For an outdoor party or if you don’t have enough staff to cover the doors, hold something of value to return to the guests when they return the headphones.

5) A list of items you can hold for security:

Their driver’s license:
This is our favorite. Keep the licenses in alphabetical order. It is pretty easy to do that and they can be found quickly for return.

Their student ID:
This works well for college events because a small percentage do not have a driver’s license. We do recommend looking at it closely because many college students have fake ID’s for buying alcohol and they may give up the fake in exchange for keeping the headphones.

A credit card:
Credit cards are not our first choice since some guests will be nervous about it, but credit cards work if they don’t have something else.

Car keys, house keys or dorm keys:
These can be difficult to keep track of since many of them look the same. Be ready with a plan to label them if you are considering this route.

6) Hold cash as a security:
We recommend $40. This is quick and easy, but if you don’t have an ATM nearby for people who don’t carry cash, you’ll need to offer alternate options too.

7) Charge a security deposit on their credit card – then refund it:
This depends on your credit card vendor. Some of them will penalize you for too many refunds. Of course you’ll need a card reader for your phone and an account with a company like Square, Paypal, or other.

8) Charge the money on Paypal, then send it back instead of refunding it:
This way you avoid the problem of too many refunds, but you do have to pay Paypal’s transaction fees for the extra transaction.

9) Hold a paper personal check:
This can only be one option of several because many people don’t carry checkbooks anymore. Also checks can bounce or the guest can stop payment.

10) Make Announcements:

Let guests know that you are on the hook to pay for any headphones that are not returned.

In today’s disposable culture, they may not even realize you have to return them. An announcement will help.

Let guests know that the headphones won’t work anywhere else.
Without the announcement, people will automatically assume that they are either Bluetooth or WiFi and that they will work at home.

They also may not realize that they can’t recharge or replace the batteries without the dedicated chargers.

They may not realize that they need the exact FM frequency to even send a signal to the headphones.

The above information will make your guests less likely to steal them on purpose.

In the future:

The headphones may be tagged with GPS chips or have Barcodes that can make this process more streamlined and accurate in the future.

For now, this is a developing market with a few wrinkles that still need to be ironed out.

But if you put a handful of the above strategies into place, you can experience this hot new trend with minimal equipment loss and maximum party enjoyment.

We are so glad that you’ve chosen to rent your equipment from www.silent-disco-rental.com

Party On!

Top ten reasons to rent silent disco equipment for your next party

#10 Ease of use/setup

If you rent your silent disco equipment from www.silent-disco-rental.com, everything is already hardwired and neatly built into it’s own case when it is delivered to your door.

There is literally no assembly required. Loose wires are all neatly tucked away. It looks better at your party and it is easier to use.

There are no tangled cords to figure out or speaker placement issues to deal with. You can focus on more important party details, like having fun with your friends and family.

Of course, the silent disco headphones are already charged up and ready to go. Hand them out to your guests. They do the rest.

All you need is one outlet, your phone or tablet to play your music and you are up and running!

#9 It is the hottest new party trend of 2017.

Let’s face it. One of the biggest barriers to having fun at a party is being unable to forget your own troubles.

But when you see something new and interesting – like people dancing to music you can’t hear, you get curious. That helps you to relax.

The next thing you know, you are having the time of your life playing air-guitar and screaming rock lyrics into your beer-bottle microphone.

#8 Light up headphones add to the party atmosphere.

The headphones light up according to which channel the wearer selects. The entire earpiece is illuminated by either a red, green or blue LEDs. In low light, this is especially striking.

As the dancers move to the music, it is a human light show.

#7 The competition between playlists.

Whether you have three live DJ’s or just a friend’s Spotify playlist competing against yours, you can see which channel your guests are listening to by what color their headphones are. It is exciting to watch and see which songs are favorites in the crowd.

This adds a whole new level of fun for your guests as they enthusiastically try to convince fellow dancers to switch to channels.

If it is your playlist that is getting all the love, the visual feedback is exhilarating! Next thing you know, all your your friends want to take you on with their playlists!

It’s like the wild west all over again!

#6 Guests choose their own volume level.

What is the one thing that causes more complaints at a party than at any other? That’s right. The volume. It is either too low or too high.

Thank the good Lord above, each of these headphones have their own, easy to use, volume control!

Can you imagine every single guest at your party thinking the music volume is perfect? Welcome to the age of miracles!

2017 doesn’t suck after-all!

#5 Your guests can converse more easily with a Silent Disco format.

Headphones make it easier to talk to your partner. Take a second to think about this. With regular loudspeakers at dance-floor volume, how do you talk to your partner? -You yell at them. By the end of the night, your voice is gone and your ears are bleeding.

But with headphones, when you want to talk to your partner, you simply lift the headphones from your ear(s) or slide them down to your neck. Now you can talk in normal conversational volume!

Finally, you can whisper sexy-sweet-nothings to your dancing partner and they will hear you!

#4 User switchable channels mean more engagement on the part of your guests.

Afraid that some of your guests won’t want to get involved? You see them at every conventional loud music party. They are leaning against the wall with their arms crossed doing nothing.

They are living manifestations of Newton’s Law of Inertia, -which states an object at rest tends to stay at rest while an object in motion tends to stay in motion.

Without the headphones, there is nothing to get those guests started. But with the headphones, they are forced to keep switching their own channels in order to hear what they are seeing. Often, that is just enough to break them out of their resting state.

Next thing you know, they are tapping their foot, then bobbing their head, then goosing their headphone volume. Their eyes turn to fire and they moonwalk onto the dance floor to show you how it is really done!

#3 Three types of music playing simultaneously!

Worried they might not like your music?

Well, with only one set of loudspeakers, one song is all they get. Like it or leave it. Is that the message you want to send to your party guests?

Now you don’t have to. Just show them how to change their own channel on their headphones. Now they have three song options instead of just one.

We recommend using different genres on each channel. For example try: Blue channel – retro, Red channel – top 40, and green channel – old school hip-hop. You get the idea.

Choose your own genre’s depending on your guest list. Maybe one of them should be country, R&B, Salsa, Swing… The sky is the limit!

#2 People dance more because headphones take away inhibitions.

People wearing headphones feel more protected from the judgment of their friends.

This is especially true when wearing over-the-ear headphones that are playing music. Given that one of the reasons people don’t dance is fear of criticism, headphones create dancers!

Combine this with the fact that -because three different channels of music are possible – you can be dancing to a different song than your partner. That means you don’t have to worry about matching their rhythm.

Let the uninhibited  dancing begin!

And the #1 reason to have your next party be a silent disco party?

You can have your party anywhere because it doesn’t violate noise ordinances!

Suddenly, you can have a backyard dance party without the cops telling you to shut down the music!

Instead of your backyard, try the library, the mall, the subway, or the park. The only noise outsiders will hear from your party is your guests singing along and having the time of their lives!

Our Equipment: Zero Assembly Required

With our equipment there is zero assembly required: Most companies send you the parts with a instructions how to plug in all the wires. The instructions are easy enough, but do you want to spend your time untangling wires when you are getting ready for a party?

Also, with the company that requires assembly, you will still have a mess of wires even after they are plugged in. Ours are neatly coiled and or hidden in our convenient travel case. Watch the video below.

With our set up, even the power strip is built in and includes USB ports for charging your device and extra outlets for your computer. You need just one outlet and your music player. Boom! Ready to Rock!

What are silent disco headphones?

Fee to rent silent disco is per headphone

What makes silent disco headphones different than regular headphones?

Unlike regular headphones that allow you to listen to your own audio, silent disco headphones allow a group of people to listen to a single source at a party or group event.

Silent disco headphones are wireless over-the-ear headphones (as opposed to earbuds) that pick up their audio signal from a special transmitter used by the DJ, Band, or presenter.

The ‘disco’ part of the term, silent disco headphones, does not refer to the ‘disco’ genre. It refers to the fact that they are typically used for dance party music.

Additionally, a ‘Silent Disco’ dance party does not mean that there will be 70’s style disco music played. It only means that silent disco headphones will be listened to by the dancers as opposed to the loudspeakers of a traditional PA system.

The headphones, are used for all genres and types of audio and have a range of 300 meters (about three football fields) from the DJ(s), Band(s) or presenter(s).

This makes silent disco a perfect option to allow large groups of people to dance to ‘loud’ music in relative ‘silence’.

Silent disco headphones allow large groups of people to listen to one audio source
Wireless silent disco headphones allow large groups of people to listen to the same audio source(s).

The silent aspect of these headphones have made silent disco parties extremely popular in high-density-population areas and in any location that has noise ordinances.

When silent disco headphones are used, large outdoor music festivals can be held inside city limits where the noise would otherwise be prohibitively loud.

Want to have a dance party in your local library?
Silent disco headphones will allow you to do that in silence!

The headphones allow parties to continue into the after-hours in relative quiet which keeps the neighbors happy and the police from being called in to break up the party.

Think about a simple party in your backyard. If you want to have loud music playing but you know your neighbors would kill you, silent disco headphones are a game changer.

Your guests can play the music as loud as they want to and nobody is going to call the cops!

With silent disco headphones, you can even have a party in your hotel room or apartment without having to worry about getting kicked out!

Silent disco headphones allow dancers to have conversations.

When the music comes from loudspeakers at a dance party, if is very difficult for dancers to have a conversation. They have to yell to be heard above the music or step outside to talk.

With silent disco parties, it is super easy to have conversations because all you have to do is remove your headphones.

The loud music disappears immediately when you remove the headphones. Now you can talk freely in a conversational tone.

No more need to blow out your vocal cords trying to talk to your friends over the music.

Talking to your friends at a dance party is way easier with silent disco!

Silent disco headphones don’t all have the same number of channels.

When the concept started in the 90’s and early 2000’s, the headphones picked up a single channel only. Now you can find headphones with anywhere from 1 to 10 channels.

For each channel, you need a separate transmitter connected to its own audio source.

The most popular systems today are three channels. This means that there are three transmitters, -each with their own audio source.

Headphone wearers can choose to listen to any one of three audio sources at any given moment by switching the channel on their headphones.

Popular uses for Silent Disco headphones:

A popular use is to avoid using a DJ by having three different playlists streaming from Spotify or Apple Music to three different cell phones. Each of those cell phones are connected to one of the three transmitters. Each transmitter broadcasts wirelessly to one of the channels on the headphones.

At a large dance party or rave, there might be three live DJs. Each DJ is feeding their audio into one of the transmitters and competing for the listeners attention.

The headphones light up in a different color according to which channel the dancer is listening to. This allows the DJs to see who is listening to their feed which adds additional fun and excitement to all involved.

Since our humble beginnings, we’ve racked up an impressive number of high profile clients including the producers of Grownish, Google, Disney, Princeton, Cornell, Harvard, The Potter’s house, Lakewood church and many many others too numerous to list.

Why should you use Silent disco as a marketing tool?

Associating your brand or message with a hot new trend like silent disco helps your brand or message seem hot and new too!

This makes renting silent disco an extremely popular choice for churches, colleges and organizations of all types. If your event uses newer trends for its entertainment, your product or message is also perceived as a newer trend by association.

Additionally, silent disco as a movement is more prominent with the young people. Churches and universities especially want to appeal to the young people, so they make up the bulk of our clients.

That is the same reason that Google and Disney choose our product. They need to appeal to the young people because their lives depend on it! Appearing contemporary and relevant is their number one marketing tool.

If your product or message is intended for young people or if you want your message to be perceived as contemporary and/or up-and-coming. Consider renting a silent disco headphone system from us.

Take a look at the marketing implied by the Grownish clip below. Grownish is a show about young people with young people as its intended audience.

This is Season 2 Episode 19 of Grownish. The producer of Grownish called us and asked us to overnight ship the headphones for a filming the next day.

Notice our smiley face logo the clip? Why do you think they showed that? Why do you think they mostly chose blue as the color?

How does it play into the mood of the scene?

Silent Disco as a setting on this episode of Lethal Weapon.

In the clip below, they are using silent disco to show how old and ‘out-of-touch’ the detectives are. Again the fact that silent disco is something new and hip helps to establish the point that the detectives are past their prime and have been left behind by contemporary culture.

Silent disco on season 1, Episode 10 of Lethal Weapon!

How can your company or message benefit by associating itself with new movements and contemporary cultural trends?

If you are putting on an event, how would a silent disco format change the feel and the perception that your guests walk away with as they associate the entertainment with your brand?

What is it really like at Silent Disco?

What is it really like when you go to a silent disco and why doesn’t it look like fun on YouTube?

Silent disco looks really stupid on video. It just does not translate well.

Silent disco even sounds stupid when you try to tell someone what it is like. At the end of the day, the old cliche is true. “You’ve just got to experience if for yourself!”

And yet, here we are! I’m going to attempt to tell you what it is like in spite of the odds against me.

So, against your better wisdom, you have finally given in to three months of nagging from your best friend. You are going to a silent disco tonight!

Your friend is all excited and you are about as comfortable as an earthworm stuck in the middle of the road as the sun is coming up.

You get there and there is a line. You hate waiting in lines!

Your friend explains that they have to check you in at the door to assign you a pair of headphones and hold your ID in order to make sure the headphones don’t get stolen.

Great! Not only are you going to feel stupid once you get in there, but you have to wait in line for the privilege.

Hopefully nobody will recognize you while you wait.

Finally you get to the head of the line. They hand you your headphones in exchange for your ID. They start to explain how the headphones work as your friend interrupts saying she’ll take care of that. What?

You can’t just listen to music? You didn’t need instructions for your ear buds! What kind’ve archaic headphones are these that you need instructions?

There is a channel selector, a volume wheel and a power switch.

Each time you switch the channel the headset changes color. There are three colors; one for each of the three channels.

The sound quality is surprisingly good.

Being able to set your own volume level is a game-changer for clubbing.

You are so used to having the music uncomfortably loud that it is almost jarring to be able to set it yourself.

Your friend turns to talk to you but you can’t hear her. As you stare at her quizzically, she beckons for you to remove your headphones.

It is shockingly silent! You can talk to your friend without raising your voice!

You find that you can also set the headphones around your neck and hear the music at a low volume while you talk to your friend.

Then you start dancing and that is where the magic happens.

You never knew you were such a good dancer until you tried it with headphones on!

For some reason, your inhibitions disappear when you are wearing headphones!

Somehow your ego is protected by the headphones! They surround you with courage and take you to a place that feels like no one can laugh at you!

You can’t remember ever having this much fun dancing!

Your friend appears to be listening to a different song, and you can tell because her headphones are a different color then yours.

She beckons for you to listen to her channel. You beckon for her to listen to yours.

A hilarious babbling of beckoning ensues with each of you trying to mime louder than the other. You start cracking up! -Having fun in spite of yourself!

You learn that half the fun of silent disco is trying to convince your partner to listen to the same channel you are listening to.

When it comes to songs that have a sing-a-long chorus or a particularly recognizable dance move, you start to over-emphasize everything in an attempt to draw in your partner to your favorite channel.

You find yourself cracking up against your will! There is such a cognitive dissonance to the whole thing!

Soon you’ve forgotten all of your worries of the day and have slipped through the silent disco portal and in an alternate headphone world of hilarity!

Some Silent Discos employ three live DJ’s and each DJ supplies the music for one of the three channels on your headphones.

This leads to an implied competition between the DJs, each trying to get the most people listening to their channel.

Because the headphones change color according to the channel being listened to, the whole room full of bouncing headphones keep sweeping back and forth from color to color.

Because each headphone is on top of a dancers head, it is like one big ever-changing human light show.

This is another source of fun as you make requests of your favorite DJ and/or watch your favorite DJ attract listeners and then lose them.

This drama between DJs is significantly more fun than the typical criticizing of the DJ choices in a traditional clubbing atmosphere.

The sheer number of music choices is a delightful break for our collective attention deficit disorders.

Not only are there three different songs playing at any given time but the DJs tend to switch more often in order to hold their listeners.

Don’t we all just love listening to the first two choruses of a song and then clicking on another favorite? Well now you can!

Add that to the DJs switching songs much more often than they would if they were working alone because of the other two other DJ competitors, and it is a music lover’s paradise!

It is exhaustingly fun! At the end of the night your stomach hurts from all the laughing you did and you feel as relaxed as if you just finished a marathon!

You come home and try to tell your friends about it. They don’t want to hear about it. They just don’t get it.

You can’t figure out why they don’t believe you when you tell them how much fun it was! Then you realize, -that it just doesn’t transfer well.

They’ve just got to be there themselves!

The following video clip from a New York City Silent Disco party gives a pretty good idea of the what the experience feels like and looks like. The language is English once you get about a minute into the video.

How Does Silent Disco Work at a Wedding Reception

I have been a full-time mobile DJ using a traditional sound system with loudspeakers for receptions all of my adult life. I have thousands of satisfied clients.

Why would I start offering Silent Disco Headphones?
What is wrong with the old way?

There are two big problems with the old way of having just loudspeakers at wedding receptions:

1) Half the guests think the music is too soft and the other half think it is too loud.
2) Everybody wants to hear different music. There is not enough time to play all of the requests.

Silent Disco headphones solve the first problem by giving each wearer their own volume control.

They solve the second problem by allowing the transmission of three different channels of music to the headphones, thereby giving dancers three times as many songs to choose from.

If you don’t solve the problems, some people will go home early or leave the dance-floor.

Everyone wants people to stay longer, dance more and have more fun! The Silent Disco headphones are a fantastic solution.

It all started when I read an article in Martha Stewart’s Wedding Magazine. The article gives a strong endorsement to Silent Disco weddings and also suggests that you’ve got to see it to believe it. This is because it is not a small incremental change.

It is a completely new way to deliver dance music and gives a wedding reception quite a different feel.

Silent Disco is also listed by Wedding Wire as among the hottest reception trends for 2017.

What would a Silent Disco wedding reception look like?

One way is to have no sound system at all. The music and announcements would only run through the headphones. This would be awkward if dinner is served. Most guests want to freely converse during that time and the headphones would just be in the way.

A Silent Disco wedding reception works better if there is a traditional sound system for the cocktail and dinner music as well as for the introductions, announcements, and special dances. Then the headphones come out for the dance music and would be worn by the dancers.

The sound system continues to play soft music throughout the reception while the guests use the headphones when they want to dance.

The headphones have three different channels which allow three different dance songs to play simultaneously. Your DJ(s) or playlist(s) would be transmitting the music to the headphones.

1) You could have three live DJ’s, each transmitting on their own channel.
2) You could have just one live DJ working all three channels.
3) You could skip the live DJ entirely by having three devices transmitting a different playlist to each channel.

Since there would be quiet music still playing over the sound system, the guests who only want to talk would stay longer and have more fun.

Since the dancers would be able to turn it up as loud as they want, they would have more fun and stay longer.

Also, the dancers would have three times as many music options to choose from, so they are going to like the music better. Again, that means they will have more fun and stay longer.

Headphones have independent volume controls, three channels & change color to show which one you are listening to.

Silent Disco allows your reception to go later than allowed by noise ordinances:
Especially if your reception is outdoors or in a location requiring the loud music to shut down at a certain time; Now the party can keep going as late as you want it to. Outdoor receptions, barn receptions, and even hotels that rent rooms within earshot of the banquet hall benefit from Silent Disco.

What is a silent party and why would I want one?

Let’s talk about what a silent party is (a.k.a. silent disco) and why you might want one.

A silent party/silent disco is where everyone is listening to the entertainment (or audio from any source) by wearing wireless silent disco headphones instead of by listening to loudspeakers.

There are many variations of audio that people might be listening to but the common denominator in all of these silent parties is that only the people wearing headphones can hear the entertainment.

Some of these headphones can pick up more than one channel of audio. If you have that type, it means your guests can choose from multiple audio entertainment sources.

The headphones that we rent are the three channel type.

Why would you want to host a silent party?

If you need to obey noise ordinances, but you still want to have audio entertainment at your party, then silent disco headphone systems are the best way to go about it.

Even if you want to have a party in your backyard, but you don’t want to annoy your neighbors, keeping the loud music in your guest’s headphones is a great idea!

We see the same type of thing in apartment building parties. You can’t have loud music without pissing off the people who live above you, below you and beside you.

Silent disco headphones are the perfect solution to keep your guests entertained and your neighbors happy at the same time.

Silent disco headphones are also a quiet solution for wedding receptions in quiet places.

Wedding receptions that are in parks, museums, on beaches, and in busy vacation spots often need to keep the noise down or quit early. Again, silent disco headphones are an ideal way to keep everyone happy!

Even weddings on hotels often have to end the loud music at a certain hour. Silent disco headphones can be the perfect way to keep the party going after-hours.

Headphones can be an ideal solution in a variety of other silent applications.

We have seen people use them to watch a movie in their backyard. If they use headphones with multiple channels, guests can have their choice of which movie they want to watch!

These work great at conferences. If your silent disco headphones have three channel options, you can host three separate breakout presentations in the same room. Guests can stay right in the main room and choose which presenter they want to listen to.

Exhibits at trade shows that use audio presentations can use them so that visitors of the exhibit can hear in spite of all the ambient noise around them.

They can be used by translators. Only the people that need the translation would wear the headphones.

And of course at music festivals in town, there could be three performance stages right next to each other. Visitors could choose which performance they want to listen to and onlookers without headphones on could enjoy relative quiet.

Here is an article from the New York Times describing their take.
